KAP Therapy

Ketamine is a medication known for its fast-acting effects on depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. It was first used as an anesthetic but has been found to help with mental health due to its unique effects on the brain. Ketamine works by blocking NMDA receptors, which increase brain activity and help form new connections. This process can quickly reduce symptoms of mental health issues.

Preparation session

It is important to have a clear understanding of what your intention for using the medicine. It will help prepare you to get the most out of the experience, and to feel safe and contained during the process.

Three-hours for KAP session

The spot is reserved for introduction, intention setting and guidelines about the session. The KAP experience will usually last about one hour, depending on your metabolism and  body system. The third hour is to ensure that you have time to rebalance and stabilize.Integration can begin if you feel ready for it. Some people metabolize Ketamine faster than others.

Integration session

Integration is key. The medicine makes the way, the integration helps makes sense of the experience and its connection to your healing journey and the work that you have already started in therapy. All though integration will happen after the session as well, it is important to put the pieces together, in the context of intention and your specific therapeutic goals.

Please reach out if you are interested in adding this to our therapeutic work together. As always, I am grateful and feel privileged to be a small part of your healing journey.

What is Ketamine-assisted Psychotherapy?

Ketamine, originally used as an anesthetic, is now recognized for its rapid effects on depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction. It works by blocking NMDA receptors, which enhances brain activity and promotes the formation of new neural connections, quickly alleviating symptoms of mental health issues.

Ketamine-assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) integrates ketamine with therapeutic sessions. During these sessions, patients take ketamine under medical supervision—typically via injection, nasal spray, or tablet. The medication reduces defensiveness, enabling patients to safely explore challenging emotions and memories. This can lead to significant breakthroughs in understanding and managing their mental health.

At Within, we utilize KAP to support individuals facing mental health challenges, such as treatment-resistant depression or anxiety. Our approach combines KAP with robust psychological support, offering a comprehensive strategy for mental well-being.

What to expect with KAP?

We start with a discovery call to discuss your needs and symptoms, determining if ketamine-assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) might benefit you. If it seems appropriate, you'll have an initial consultation and psychiatric assessment with our medical team. Once cleared, we'll schedule a psychedelic preparation session with your guide to set your intentions, goals, and focus for treatment. These sessions are essential for preparing you mentally and emotionally for the therapy.

A typical KAP session lasts about two hours. Before administering the ketamine, you'll meet with your guide to prepare, ground yourself, and discuss your intentions. During the session, your guide will be present throughout your entire experience, offering knowledgeable guidance and support to help you handle any challenges. Our approach involves preparing the environment (setting) to create a sense of safety, trust, and relaxation, as well as helping you prepare mentally and emotionally (set) to navigate the experience. Many clients describe feelings of detachment from their bodies, akin to observing themselves from a distance, which can help you explore deep emotions safely.

After the session, there’s often much to process. This stage is vital for integrating the insights gained during therapy. You'll have follow-up sessions with your guide and a licensed therapist to understand and apply these insights to your daily life. These integration sessions aim to ensure the benefits of the ketamine experience are long-lasting and meaningful, helping you implement positive changes.

Who should consider KAP?

Everyone’s experience with ketamine is unique. Your feelings, insights, and reactions can vary based on your personal history and the issues being addressed. Ketamine therapy, a form of psychedelic therapy, is often recommended for those struggling with depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, or addiction that hasn’t responded to other treatments.

It can be particularly beneficial for those who haven’t found relief through traditional methods. However, it may not be suitable for individuals with a history of psychosis, schizophrenia, high blood pressure, or severe liver conditions. A thorough evaluation with a healthcare professional will help determine if this therapy is right for you.

What is psychedelic integration?

Psychedelic integration is a crucial part of the process, involving the understanding and application of lessons from your ketamine experience to daily life. This can be done independently or with support from peers, community, coaches, or therapists.

The integration process varies for everyone but always aims to make sense of the psychedelic experience and apply the insights gained. It helps you achieve balance and wholeness in mind, body, spirit, lifestyle, and relationships. Integration is essential for ongoing personal growth and healing.

Beginning a psychedelic journey can provide new perspectives and insights, but the true benefit lies in integrating these experiences into your daily life. Integration transforms short-term insights into lasting wisdom, involving the revisitation and active engagement with your experiences to ensure valuable lessons endure.
